Cooking with Kids: Witch Hat Treats (in the Crockpot)

What is this cute project?
Cute, little witch's hats!
This photo is from 365 Days of Crockpot.

In the slow cooker?!

Did I also mention that they're made with melted M&M's and taste sinfully delicious
What the?!

There's something inside?!

Okay, okay....I'll stop teasing, so you can stop drooling and run to the store.

DISCLAIMER:  The chocolate in these pictures is significantly thicker than it would be if you follow the directions correctly.  I got my M&M's  all nice and melted in the crockpot (like in the second picture) only to discover that I'd bought the super size sugar cones with uneven bottoms.  The chocolate in all these pictures (except the 2nd one) sat overnight in the crockpot and was remelted in the microwave the next day.

DISCLAIMER #2:  Melted M&M's are pretty doggone tasty and may cause slight choco-obsession in certain prone individuals.

The ingredients:

4 cups plain M&Ms, divided
1/3 cup milk
3 Tbs. butter
12 chocolate cookies (about 3-inches diameter)
12 sugar ice cream cones

Directions:

Set aside 1-3/4 cups M&Ms.
Place remaining M&M's in a blender or food processor and pulse until finely and evenly chopped (but don't do it for too long or they will start to stick together).

Let them blend a little longer than I did in this picture...
In a slow cooker, combine crushed M&Ms, milk, and butter.   Cover and cook on high for 1 hour (it will start to burn if you let it go much longer, so be ready to turn it off at an hour). Stir until smooth.

Cool the chocolate mixture just until  the kids will not burn themselves when they touch it.  Frost cones leaving one inch at tip unfrosted. Holding frosted cone by tip, fill each with a few M&Ms (up to 2 tablespoons each).

Frost top of each cookie with 1-1/2 tablespoons chocolate mixture.

Center filled cone (pointed side down) on top of frosted cookie to form hat. Flip hat over and place each hat on baking sheet.

Repeat until all cookies and cones are used. Decorate hats with remaining M&Ms.
Enjoy!

About This Blog

My name is Lara and while I'm definitely not a gourmet cook, I do love preparing tasty, healthy meals for my family. Finding new recipes to try and sharing the ones we've already fallen in love with is a passion I've had since college and the reason why I've started this blog! With five kids, I'm usually in a hurry, so you'll find most of these recipes kid friendly and simple to make.
